August 1, 1945: The United States and The Soviet Union Agree to split Korea in half.
March 5, 1953: Peace Negotiations.
Prompt: Each of these events took place during the war and played a strong part in what the outcome of the war came to be. Some implications I can draw about these events and their role is that the war might not have happened, or might not have been the same if it wasn't for many of these events.
August 1, 1945: The United States and The Soviet Union Agree to split Korea in half.
- The US and SU agreed to split the country in half.
- They wanted to disarm the Japanese army as soon as possible.
- The US believed it was a temporary fix.
- However, the Soviets had a different plan. They had a short reign of terror in North Korea.
- The US president Harry S. Truman presents his "Truman Doctrine", giving American aid to any nation that ins threatened by communist rule.
- Communists from the south did not agree to split the country.
- A war was fought in many parts of South Korea.
- The North was supported by the Soviet Union & the People's Republic of China.
- The UN and US join the war with South Koreans.
- 2.5 million people dies and about 1 million casualties from both the North & South.
- Harry S. Truman advises MacArthur (the General at the time.) to move past the 38th parallel. And to stop if they run into Soviet troops.
- He feared if they fought back, it may start a conflict the would spark another world war.
March 5, 1953: Peace Negotiations.
- Premier Joseph Stalin Died and the Soviets were looking for peace.
- Korea & China did not want to keep fighting without support from their strongest military partner.
- All countries were ready to end the war and stop fighting with one another.
- In July, a cease fire was called and stopped the fighting.
- Even though the war was over, Korea was still divided into two sides who still did not agree with each other.
- The US, North Korea, and China come to an agreement with no official treaty.
- The country was to be divided by the line of latitude and neither side would claim victory.
